The Archival Pigment Emulsion Transfer System was developed by Bonny Lhotka. Her DASS ART line of products enables users to coat uncoated papers for inkjet printing or transfer images from pigment-printed, Inkjet Transparency films to a wide array of substrates, including paper, metal, and ceramics.

DASS ART Mill-Finish Aluminum Sheets are one of the man substrates appropriate for a variety of transfer techniques. These sheets have a protective plastic cover on one side. Minor imperfections are sporadic, but will not affect their use in these processes. These are ideal for use with DASS ART SuperSauce and WonderSauce processes and can be used with Universal Precoat for direct imaging.

**Mill finish aluminum means it is comes from the factory in a raw state.  Alloys can vary from batch to batch.  That means some batches may have a high surface tension that resists the application of media like Dass Art WonderSauce, SuperSauce or Universal Precoat II.  If this happens with the aluminum you receive, you will need to prepare the metal plate for the transfer processes by cleaning it.
1. Remove the protective plastic. Make a paste of Cascade Complete using hot water.  It may take up to 30 minutes for the detergent to dissolve into a paste.  Scrub the surface with the paste until the paper towel gets a black residue on it. Black residue means the mill finish has been broken down.  When the plate is rinsed off under running water, watch to see if the water flows off in a smooth sheet.  If the water draws up, clean the plate a second time.  Once the water flows off smoothly, the WonderSauce or SuperSauce can be applied in an even coat.
Or
2.  Remove the protective plastic and then run the plates through the dishwasher using Bubble Bandit Dish washer detergent.  Bubble Bandit will only make a minor shift in the color of the metal and completely clean off the mill finish. Other brands of detergent can change the color of the metal.

As a final prep, before you coat the aluminum with your chosen sauce, wipe down the plate with 91% isopropyl alcohol to remove any fingerprint oil and dust.

Tip: These sheets are easy to "age" in your dishwasher. Peel the plastic coating off of each sheet. Tear aluminum foil into large sheets which you will crumple and place between each mill-finished sheet. Stack in the dishwasher. Load the dishwasher with Cascade Platinum and select the Heavy and Hot settings. If you can, do not open your dishwasher for at least  6-8 hours after the cycle has completed. This way the heat will continue to "cook" the plates. Remove the plates from the dishwasher and throw away the aluminum foil. Check the mill-finished plates for soap residue. Clean off the reside under running water with the scratchy side of a sponge. Put in rack to dry. You will have "aged" plates with water stains and flow patterns. Colors may range from gold to brown to slight rainbow colors. For more info see The Last Layer Chapter 5.
