Biography

Born in Los Angeles, Lesley Krane earned an A.A. degree in Photography at Santa Monica College, got a B.A. in Art at UCLA, then earned an M.F.A. in Studio Art at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque in 1995. She began teaching Photography in the Art Department at CSUN in 1999 and has been a member of the full-time faculty there since 2002. Committed to the practice of still photography, Lesley teaches her students to have a reverence and sensitivity for the medium. She is a published artist and has exhibited her work at local and national venues. "I approach the idea of 'Alternative Processes' from a highly subjective point of view. I am greatly influenced by concepts of domesticity and the roles assumed by women who inhabit domestic spaces. Also, I have resigned myself to the fact that I am quite suggestible to the 'shoulds' of those domestic roles. Not only do I include myself in many of my photographs, but also I often infuse the object that is the photograph with traces of my 'self': paper made with my hair and by my hand, emulsion coated by my hand, a running stitch applied with my hands, and, most of all, the gestural and distorted photographic image produced by the Holga camera. Beyond my grasp, whether just outside the camera's view or almost within reach of my hands, the object of my longing is brought into question."
