From the author, Dan Bassini:
"Cruel Summer is a collection of photos taken over six months of quarantine (in 2020) when my usual portrait work was not an option. I found myself re-exploring my neighborhood in a way I hadn’t since I first moved there. Patterns emerged in my work I only noticed while culling the images as a whole: flowers, fences, blue skies, barriers. Small interactions with friends, some distanced and some less-advised. The series culminates with a solo road trip around New England during what felt like a brief reprieve from the weight of the world.
Cruel Summer is a reaction to being thrust into a new way of life and coping the only way I know how. The photos capture the beauty I found around me, but there is an undercurrent of sadness and weight that looms in the pages."
